This Restless Life – Brigid Delaney
This Restless Life by Australian journalist Brigid Delaney details the slightly additive nature of the effect of globalisation, casualisation of jobs and increased mobility have on your career and lifestyle.
Is it possible to have too much choice? The Churn is about what happens when, in our consumer-driven society, we try and exercise as many choices as we are given. It is about how we have access to a greater breadth of experience than ever before, but don’t have time for the depths. It’s having a world full of information at the click of a search engine, but never going into a library; it’s travelling the world but never speaking another language; it is about going on 100 online dates but resisting relationships; it’s chopping and changing faiths depending on what your needs are at the point in time; it’s working on four short-term contracts in a year and never getting to know your colleagues.
It’s about skating on the surface of things. As a rampant consumer culture, hyper-mobility and technology give us access to more experiences than ever before, The Churn asks if we are sacrificing depth for breadth, or if it’s possible to have both.
