The Complete Ice Age: How Climate Change Shaped the World – Brian Fagan (Edited by)
In The Complete Ice Age: How Climate Change Shaped the World edited by Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the University of California Brian Fagan, four leading scientists present the most up-to-date discoveries in the different fields of Ice Age Research.
They reveal how the epoch was discovered, the profound climatic fluctuations it generated as ice sheets waxed and waned, and the myriad ways in which humans and animals coped with the changing world they lived in.
The astonishing climatic rollercoaster that was the Ice Age formed the backdrop to human evolution for almost 2.5 million years. During this time vast swathes of North America and Europe were frequently covered by ice sheets up to 2 kilometres thick, glaciers carved great valleys through the landscape and fearsome beasts including the sabre-toothed cat and woolly mammoth roamed a freezing, desolate wilderness.
What caused this period of intense cold and the intervals of rapid warming that punctuated it? And how did human populations survive in such an unstable and hostile world?
As global warming and rising sea levels threaten the very foundations of our society, the need to understand past climate and the ways in which humans and animals adapted to it have never been more imperative.
In this book, leading scientists weave a compelling story out of the most up-to-date discoveries in different fields of Ice Age research.
As the glaciers melted 10,000 years ago, our ancestors faced a staggering sea-level rise of 120 metres, far in excess of the relatively modest rise predicted for the 21st century. The final chapter issues a stark warning about the future of our planet and the consequences of our profligate lifestyles.
Magnificently illustrated with dramatic landscape photography, fossil remains of our ancestors and Ice Age beasts, and specially commissioned explanatory diagrams, The Complete Ice Age shows both the fragility of our climate system and the power of humans to adapt to the most extreme environmental challenges.

ReplyYou have to ask Who about Palko? He was a crowd favorite with the Saints a few years ago during pre-season. They worked with him for a year on the scout squad but later cut him.
Saints – Pats will likely be closer and a toss up as to which will come out victorious.
Indy – Houston, with Freeney out, Houston has a much better chance.
Against almost any other team, I’ve got to pull for Singletary and the Niners. He is such a class act kind of guy.

I like the sigining of Tyler Palko, the former Pitt QB. He’s got to be at least as worthy as all the years we kept Brian St. Pierre on the roster.

ReplyBig game today is Arsenal v Chelsea: a huge test for both teams, as both are thinking League Championship. Man U has taken it two years running, and will have something to say about all this, but today’s contest will tell much about the two challengers. Could be Chelsea’s year with their new manager – or Arsenal’s (who has a veteran coach running out of “this is a young team” excuses).
Action begins shortly from The Emirates stadium; don’t miss this one!!

ReplyRe: PalkoPalko ended his college career tied for second in school history in career touchdown passes with former Panther Alex Van Pelt with a total of 66 and was second in university history in career passing yardage, trailing Dan Marino by 254 yards. Palko’s career totals of 8,343 passing yards with 66 touchdown passes rank him as one of the top-three passers in Panther football history.
Notably, in the spring of 2005, Dave Wannstedt, after replacing Walt Harris as head coach, chose Palko over Joe Flacco as the incumbent quarterback in Pitt’s spring training. Flacco was left to run Pitt’s second team and eventually left Pitt for Division I-AA school, Delaware. Flacco is currently the starting quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. From WIKIPEDIA

I’ll say 24-21 Indy. This is a must win for Houston, and after two straight losses due to missed field goals in the last seconds (one against Indy), I think they’ll pull off the win, 27-24.

Notre Dame has got to be the most overrated program for well over a decade or two. BTW, one of my uncles was supposed to go there to be a running back but his father died and he had to stay home and help support the family in the mid 30’s. It was a disappointment that took half a century for him to overcome.

ReplySteelers D does well against Flacco. After throwing for 192 yards and a touchdown in his first game against the Steelers at Heinz Field, Flacco had a significantly more troublesome time against Dick LeBeau’s defense in the next two meetings.
He completed just 11 of 28 passes for 115 yards and was intercepted twice in the Steelers’ 13-9 victory Dec. 14 in M&T Bank Stadium. And he was 13 of 30 for 141 yards and intercepted three times in the AFC Championship game in Heinz Field. His combined passer rating for those two games was 17.1.
What’s more, Flacco was sacked three times and stopped on a fourth-and-1 sneak that led to Santonio Holmes’ 65-yard touchdown pass in the conference championship, won by the Steelers, 23-14.

Colonel queried on play calling
State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson had a lot to answer for when he presented budget-cutting measures to a legislative committee Tuesday. But he didn’t have all the answers committee members were looking for.
“Colonel, in all your years with LSU, have you ever witnessed a play like that?” asked state Rep. Tom McVea, R-St. Francisville, referring to a play in the last second of the LSU-Ole Miss game when sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson spiked the ball.
Edmonson, who volunteered as head of security for the LSU football program for 26 years, was speechless.

Arizona has been up and down this season, but the Titans are all up at the moment. This should be a good game to watch. I’ll pick the same score for the Titans as last week, 20-17 Tennessee.Come on Ed. Give Vince Young some credit too. Chris Johnson has been good all year, but we all know the reason they’re record is different is because of the QB change.

ReplyStillers will surprise
This game is a coaching challenge and I think that Coach Tomlin is up to it. A couple of years ago, I had the misfortune of speaking to a Raisin’s fan who was very smug on the basis of McNair as the BR’s QB and a new guy nobody ever heard of staring a coaching career in the burgh. One of the snide remarks concerned how dumb Tomlin looked. Well, that sure worked out well for the fans in the Charm City. In a time when you can’t say black and dumb in the same sentence, the attitude toward Mike Tomlin was a surprise as it came from a pretty liberal person.
Coach Tomlin is in an environment that allows for his freedom to manage and has an organization behind him that does not seem to chase glitter or prima donnas.
Cowboys and Redskins are poster children for the other extreme and their fans show the relationship between religion, sports obsession and stupidity.
If the D and special teams show up, Dem Stillers have a chance. I am a big fan of letting the commanders command and the soldiers fight. And now back to our Afghan War strategy….

So, 4 of the 5 have Indy at #2. A lot of that was based on their November record no doubt. They won games but not by much.

NFL will get permission from Vince Young to play the fourth quarter of every game because he owns it.

Pats
Saints
Minn
San Diego
Tomorrow’s game will shuffle that a bit, I’m sure. (DAllas at #5? Bwhahahhah)

tommyboy on November 29, 2009 at 7:27 PMEven as an Eagles fan I think Dallas is spot on at #5. These are still November power rankings, right?

ReplyHines Ward is a total ass questioning Ben R. not playing (as shown on NBC just now). Any idiot knows you just can’t risk a concussion on top of a previous one. I thought Hines Ward was a jerk. Now I know it.
I am no Ben R. fan and certainly not a Steelers fan. But his not playing is the right thing. I would respect the Steelers even less if he did play tonight.

ladyingray on November 29, 2009 at 7:48 PMHe might not even need to. CJ will probably run for 300 yards against that “defense”. These two picks today don’t really count, since Matt Schaub and the Texans are the Bizzaro Vince Young and the Titans. They give it away in the fourth.
Indy’s defense definitely could hurt them down the road, though that fluke against the Pats basically clinched home field advantage it for them. It’s still going to be a problem in the playoffs. If they had to play the Championship game in New England I’d guarantee they lose. If Tennessee wins next week they have a good shot at running the table and making the playoffs, three out of their final four games are at home, minus one away game at Seattle. The rest of the Texans schedule is @IND, STL, MIA, SD, and @SEA. Their defense isn’t the same without Haynesworth, but still formidable. This is starting to remind me a little of the Ravens when they ran the table to get in the playoffs and they never stopped, except Baltimore’s defense was legendary, but their QB and RB were nothing like the Texans currently have. I just hope Matt Millen’s faith in them running the table last week after MNF doesn’t jinx them.

ReplyLevStrauss on November 29, 2009 at 8:12 PMI wasn’t actually considering the Colts D as a problem for the Titans, but Manning…he seems to always find a way. But I also think they are due a loss, so a loss to the Titans would be extra sweet.

Replybatterup on November 29, 2009 at 6:38 PMHey–good Gators think alike! Either way, AL/FL will be a great game. I actually am feeling better about the Gators; solid win again FSU and Arkansas did very well against LSU and MS State against Ole Miss.
I couldn’t agree more on UT. The Big 12 just isn’t that great. I would put the ACC and Big 12 as above the same and look what happened to the ACC over the weekend. It’d be a travesty if Colt McCoy gets the Heisman. Spikes et al will destroy UT; TCU will at least be interesting to watch.

ladyingray on November 29, 2009 at 8:17 PMThe Colts D is a problem for the Colts, maybe I wasn’t clear. I can’t wait to see the moneyline for the game because this matchup is similar to the Colts when they used to play Jacksonville a few years ago and JAX had their number because Jackson and Drew-Jones would run over them at will, then throw Vince Young into the mix and it could get really ugly. I would not want to be a Fantasy Team that plays against CJ next week. Colts will not be undefeated after next week.

ReplyMeanwhile, the Vikings keep cruising with Brett Favre looking like the MVP & with a defense that held Chicago to 2 yards total offense in the 2nd half.

ReplyWho Dey, baby. Bengals win the 2nd Battle of Ohio this year and sweep the AFC North. The Browns aren’t looking so hot, but the Bengals need to get some more offense going if they hope to defeat Minnesota (a long shot) or San Diego (doable but very tough) and do any damage in the postseason.

ReplyTitans v. Colts ought to be really interesting next week. Today’s game against the Cardinals was GOTY material so far. 4 seconds on the clock, 4th and goal, needing a touchdown, Vince Young throws a dart to a rookie. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was really wrong about Young after last year’s meltdown. I figured he would never play another down in the NFL barring season-ending injury to the starting QB.
Hat’s off to you, Vince! You are the real deal.

ReplyNow a dilemma – I HATE the Patriots (like all the Boston teams) but they are playing against Drew Brees and the Saints Monday night. Drew Brees just appeared in that disgusting commercial for socialism, tossing a pass to Teh Won on the White House lawn, in all its fawning glory. How can I hate anyone more than the Patriots? I think I just found out. GO NEW ENGLAND!!!!

Fishoutofwater on November 29, 2009 at 10:26 PMThat is something that is beyond me. Brees is totally supportive of the military at Gitmo and in the Middle East and visits them when he can. He also is very tight with the Manning family in New Orleans who are far from being liberal, much less leftist.

Kermit on November 29, 2009 at 10:40 PMI’m pretty sure Brees was NOT happy being “asked” by the NFL to appear in an ad with Barry. Hell, I wonder if he even KNEW Barry was going to be in the ad, since there did seem to be a lot of green-screen effects going on. I’m sure he’s taking extra showers to wash off the humiliation he is feeling.

ReplyRavens and Steelers both have a couple of “should-wins” coming up before their rematch in Pittsburgh. How they each handle those may be as important to their respective playoff hopes as the game against each other. Would someone please tell Rothlis…whatever how stupid he looks with his hat on backwards. How demoralized is Houston after they had the Colts on the ropes and couldn’t put them away? Go Colts!
If the Pats have any pride left, they will be out for blood tonight. I’ll go out on a limb and say it could be worth watching.
