Amazon Kindle – Now Available In Australia – BookOffers Buyers Guide

Posted on October 7th, 2009 by admin in Featured, Kindle

Amazon.com today announced that the Kindle will become available in Australia from October 19 2009. Australian book lovers will no doubt have the new international Kindle on the top of their Christmas lists this year. BookOffers.com.au predicts that the arrival of the Kindle in Australia will be a game changer for the Australian book industry. Aussies are massive early adopters so we predict that Amazon will sell thousands of Kindles prior to Christmas 2009.

Update January 6 2010. Amazon.com has just announced that the Kindle DX (bigger screen, more memory) is now available for delivery to Australia. Here is the direct link to the Australian Kindle DX. You can also read the BookOffers.com.au Australian Kindle DX Buyers Guide here or read on if you want to find out more about the standard Australian Kindle.

Australian buyers need to think about the following before purchasing

  1. The Kindle is USD$259 + around USD$20 for shipping (via Priority International Courier) which works out to be around $305 AUD
  2. As of January 30 there are 326,000 book titles available to Australia. Amazon is working with local publishers and authors to try and add more content all the time
  3. Delivery is estimated at 3-5 days to Australian addresses. Ours arrived in 4 days
  4. A power cable is not included – a micro USB cable is included so you will need to charge it from your computer or buy a mains power adapter
  5. Books are priced in USD – most around USD$9.99 – make sure you convert this to AUD before purchasing – here is our favorite currency calculator
  6. The Browser and blog reading functions of the Australian Kindle will not work in Australia
  7. The Australian Kindle 3G coverage map is here -it uses an AT&T SIM card and a global roaming arrangement, which doesn’t cost you anything – there are no subscription fees or mobile data plans involved.
  8. Australian customs may charge for import duty – but probably won’t. (They didn’t charge us for purchasing one)
